Microneedling with Acupuncture

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that stimulates the skin’s natural healing response by creating controlled micro-injuries. This process enhances collagen and elastin production, improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, and addressing concerns such as acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and hair loss. Unlike surgical procedures, microneedling offers gradual, natural-looking skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime.

How Microneedling Works

During the treatment, a specialized microneedling device with ultra-fine needles is used to create tiny punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s wound-healing response, leading to increased collagen production and cellular renewal. Over the course of several treatments, the skin becomes firmer, smoother, and more radiant.

Potential Benefits of Microneedling

  • Enhances collagen production for firmer, youthful-looking skin
  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimizes acne scars and hyperpigmentation
  • Helps with hair restoration in areas of thinning
  • Diminishes enlarged pores
  • Supports better absorption of skincare products

Contraindications for Microneedling

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for most individuals. However, it is not recommended for those with the following conditions:

  • Use of Accutane within the last six months
  • Active bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections
  • Severe rosacea or inflammatory skin conditions
  • Blood clotting disorders or use of anticoagulant therapy
  • Skin cancer or past radiation therapy to the face
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or other long-term illnesses
  • History of keloid or raised scarring
  • Botox or dermal fillers within the last 2–4 weeks
  • Pregnancy or nursing

What to Expect During Treatment

Your skin will be cleansed and prepped before treatment begins. To ensure comfort, a numbing cream is applied, followed by the placement of acupuncture needles to enhance your session. After 20 minutes, I will use the AcuLift® microneedling device to create controlled micro-injuries in the targeted areas we’ve discussed, stimulating collagen production and skin renewal. The entire procedure typically lasts 30–50 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

After treatment, the skin may appear slightly red or pink, similar to a mild sunburn. Some mild swelling, tightness, or flaking may occur but usually resolves within 24–48 hours.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and wear SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.
  • Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours.
  • Refrain from using exfoliants, retinoids, or active skincare products for 3–5 days.
  • Keep the skin hydrated with gentle, non-irritating moisturizers.

Potential Side Effects

  • Temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling
  • Dryness or light flaking
  • Minimal pinpoint bleeding or bruising
  • Rare instances of infection (if post-care instructions are not followed)
  • Potential cold sore flare-up in individuals with a history of herpes simplex
  • Temporary or permanent lightening of freckles in treated areas

Treatment Frequency

Results are typically seen after one session, but for optimal benefits, a series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended. Maintenance treatments can be scheduled as needed to sustain results.

Insurance & Financial Responsibility

Most insurance plans do not cover microneedling as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Patients are responsible for the full cost of treatment, although the addition of acupuncture to treatment may be covered. Pricing will be discussed during your consultation.

A small patch test of lidocaine will be performed to ensure skin sensitivity before treatment. Additionally, all patients must complete an intake form prior to their session to confirm eligibility and rule out any contraindications.
