Meet Dr. Sarah

About Dr. Sarah Engen, L.Ac, DCM, Dipl.Ac BCTMB

Dr. Sarah Engen (she/her) is a Doctor of Chinese Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist, and Board-Certified Massage and Bodywork Therapist with 18 years of experience specializing in athletic recovery and performance. She began her career as a professional sports massage therapist alongside elite athletes and cycling teams to refine her expertise in targeted recovery techniques. Over time, her passion for healing expanded, leading her to specialize in Traditional Chinese Medicine and more recently, microneedling, where she focuses on skin health and skin damage recovery.

Sarah’s connection to massage and skincare began with her training at Aveda Institute Minneapolis and Juut Salonspa, where she was inspired by Horst M. Rechelbacher in her youth, the visionary founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients. Horst’s commitment to natural, sustainable products and holistic wellness resonated deeply with Sarah, shaping her understanding of skincare as an extension of overall health and vitality.

Dr. Engen’s professional evolution is also informed by a profound personal journey of self-discovery and healing. During her freshman and sophomore years in college, she frequently traveled up North, where she learned foundational teachings from Anishinaabe and Lakota communities. These teachings deepened her appreciation for the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit and continue to inspire her approach to care. Rooted in humility, respect, and gratitude for the Earth, this experience reinforced her commitment to walking a path of healing and service.

Dr. Engen earned her Doctorate in Chinese Medicine and Master’s in Acupuncture from Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, MN. She has provided care in clinical settings like Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, St. Francis Hospital, Cerenity Senior Care, and NWHSU’s Human Performance Center. Her practice integrates evidence-based techniques with personalized care to support patients’ holistic health goals.

As a seasoned soigneur for professional cycling teams since 2013, Sarah has traveled to some of the most prestigious races across the globe, providing vital support to elite athletes. Her experience spans international competitions such as the Vuelta Colombia Femenina, Tour of Ardeche in France, the Tour of Thailand, and the Tour of Turkey, as well as iconic U.S. races like the Tour of California, Redlands Bicycle Classic, and Maryland Cycling Classic. With a focus on athlete recovery and performance, Dr. Engen’s expertise has been integral to teams like DNA Pro Cycling, Jelly Belly, and Rally Pro Cycling. Her dedication to excellence has made her a trusted partner in the high-pressure world of professional cycling.

Outside of her clinic, Sarah enjoys racing cyclocross, gravel, and fat bikes, as well as adventuring with her partner, Bjørn, and her son. She finds inspiration in the dynamic cultural landscape of Minneapolis, celebrated for its rich traditions in music, art, and puppetry. The city’s vibrant energy, rooted in social justice and community advocacy, continues to shape and inspire her creative and professional journey.

At her Sports Acupuncture & Microneedling clinic, Dr. Engen creates a welcoming space where her patients can heal, rejuvenate, and thrive. Whether you are an athlete seeking peak performance, someone looking to enhance skin health, or simply in need of holistic care, Dr. Engen is here to guide you on your journey to wellness.
